Oceanico Old Course, Vilamoura Algarve Portugal

Central Algarve Region, Par 73, 6254 metres, 1969

Green Fee Guide: €€€€

Overview: The Old Course was the first course to be built in Vilamoura and so offers a fully mature parkland setting, framed by pine trees. The Old Course is located just to the north of Vilamoura town centre.

Reasons to play the Old Course Golf: One of the early courses that helped to build the reputation of the Algarve as a major golf venue, the Old Course is something of a classic and is much-loved by thousands of golfers.

Factors to consider at the Old Course Golf: The green fee is high, in peak months expect to pay around €130. When you consider that you can play excellent courses nearby like Quinta do Lago or Vila Sol for nearly €30 less, the Old Course looks expensive. It gets packed in the spring and autumn.

Degree of difficulty of the Old Course Golf: The first three holes give you a gentle introduction, but then the Old Course starts to show its teeth. The ability to shape the ball off the tee is a big advantage on some holes. Staying out of the trees is your main priority. The owners suggest a maximum handicap of 24 for men. Expect to have handicap certificates checked.

Our overall verdict: A classy course but it loses marks because of the heafty green fee compared to its peers. Recommended
